Worship & Serve
|
|
Worship is moving beyond our
self-centered lives to meet the one who
created us for something better.
--R. Frost-- |

|
|
For some,
participation in worship isn't
complete without an act of service...
the welcoming of fellow parishioners,
the oration of scriptural text, the
preparation of the altar, the leading
of song...
If you're
interested in serving others during
our worship services, following are
some roles to explore. If you'd like
to find other ways to serve the parish
and community, be sure to consult our
Ministries
page.

Acolytes |
Since the
year 250 A.D., acolytes have served at
the altar of God. Like their ancient
predecessors, members of the St.
George Guild of Acolytes light church
candles before a liturgy and assist
the worship Celebrant at the altar. As
part of their more "modern" duties,
they participate in processions and
assist with the collection of gifts at
offertory time. A link to the current
acolyte schedule can be found online
from the
Youth Calendar page.
Young people (grades six through
college) are invited to consider
ministry as an acolyte. For more
information, contact The Reverend
Kiah Webster. |
|
Altar Guild |
The Altar
Guild is a group of men and women who
help prepare the church for worship --
ensuring proper vestments are set out
for clergy, placing linens and vessels
on the altar, and preparing the
lector's stall with the day's
readings. Members of the guild also
maintain vestments, altar linens, and
other liturgical appointments, such as
vessels, processional crosses,
torches, etc.
If you'd
like to join the Altar Guild,
E-mail Sara.

Choir Members
 |
Often
accompanied by the church's
magnificent Fisk
pipe organ, the
St. George Choir leads
the congregation in song during the
10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service and
special seasonal liturgies. Membership
is open to adults and teens.
Choir rehearsals are conducted from
7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings
September through May at the church.
If you're interested in joining,
please contact our Choirmaster,
Mike Brittenback. |
|
Greeters |
To make
sure everyone is warmly received,
greeters welcome parishioners and
guests as they enter the church.
If you're
interested in greeting our worshipping
congregation, contact Fay at
937-433-3867.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers |
Lay
Eucharistic Ministers bring communion
to sick and homebound members of the
parish and administer the communion
chalice during worship services. These
volunteers are specially trained and
this ministry requires licensing by
the bishop.
To learn
more about becoming a Lay Eucharistic
Minister, contact Fay at
937-433-3867.

|
Lectors |
Lectors
take an active role in worship
services, reading from scripture and
leading the congregation in the
Prayers of the People. Training
workshops are offered periodically,
but special licensing is not required.
For more
information on becoming a lector,
contact
Fr. Jim Larsen.

If you're
an instrumentalist, vocal soloist or
part of a small music group and would
like to participate in the church's
traditional music program, please
contact our music director,
Mike Brittenback.

Ushers |
Ushers
work in cooperation with the
verger
to ensure that worship services run
smoothly. They greet worshippers as
they enter the church, bring forward
the gifts of bread and wine, pass the
alms basins at offertory time, and
guide service participants to the
altar rail to receive communion.
Ushers also minister to fellow
worshippers who have questions or
special needs during the service.
If you'd
like to join our staff of ushers,
E-mail
Jan.

Vergers |
St.
George's vergers are specially trained
volunteers who assist the clergy with
preparing for and conducting worship
services. In simple terms, they are
the "master of ceremony" at each
service; it is their responsibility to
see that the liturgy runs smoothly.
Vergers lead the majority of
processions, working closely with the
acolyte
team. As a special responsibility,
they are also charged with
contributing to the Christian
formation of acolytes and shaping
their ministry.
To find
our more about becoming a verger,
call Bob Hard at
937-848-8509. |
