...where we're going |
"Grace
is God's favor towards us, unearned
and undeserved; by grace God forgives
our sins, enlightens our minds, stirs
our hearts, and strengthens our
wills."
- The Book of Common Prayer, p. 858 |

We Have Been and ... Where We Are Going

The
parish history of St. George's
Episcopal Church begins with our
founding in 1954. Challenged with
spreading the Gospel of Jesus
Christ amidst a moving population,
a group of parishioners from St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oakwood
began meeting in the basement of a
local bank. Community and
fellowship began to grow.
By 1956 the first building was
erected on farm land a few miles
south when Far Hills Avenue was
little more than a country road.
Bishop Henry Hobson stepped out of
his car in an orchard and declared:
“Here we will build a church!”
We grew rapidly as Dayton spread
southward. The present Main
Sanctuary and Nave was built in
1963 when the church outgrew what
is now the Parish Hall. In 1994 an
elevator was added contained in a
new bell tower, from which St.
George’s Millennium Bell now rings.
Today, St. George’s is an open,
diverse, and caring community with
a strong commitment to children and
youth ministries, fellowship and
pastoral care. We also look beyond
our walls, and serve the broader
community in Dayton through
numerous outreach programs, and
over the last decade have formed a
strong international relationship
with Christians in Sablino, Russia
and LaLabor, Guatemala.
With the acquisition of 41 Manor
Lane (the adjacent 3.7 acre
property to our east) in 2005, our
campus is free to expand as God
calls us forward into new
ministries and opportunities for
growth in Christ’s love and
service.
We pray that the Holy Spirit may
continue to bless us - and all
people - who seek to nurture God’s
kingdom and grow into the Body of
Christ.
"Glory to God whose power,
working in us, can do infinitely
more than we can ask or imagine:
Glory to God from generation to
generation in the Church, and in
Christ Jesus for ever and ever."
-- Ephesians: 3:20-21
