Service in the Community and the
World is reaching out in Christ's
love ...
The
Social Issues Committee
examines the needs and concerns of
those in the greater community and
the world beyond our congregation
and coordinates outreach
ministries. The committee makes
recommendations to the
Vestry regarding
outreach grants and sponsors the
annual Spaghetti Supper which
benefits outreach projects. Social
Issues sponsors St. George's
participation in CROP Walk, Blanket
Sunday, and community food
collections.
Habitat for Humanity
St.
George's joins with other area
Episcopal churches to fund and
build Habitat homes in Dayton.
Habitat
for Humanity is
a worldwide non-denominational
organization committed to seeing
that all people have decent
housing.
CROP
Walk
When CROP began in 1947 the name
was an acronym for the Christian
Rural Overseas Program; its primary
mission was to help Midwest farm
families to share their grain with
hungry neighbors in post-World War
II Europe and Asia.
CROP
is no longer an acronym; it is the
name given to community, interfaith
hunger education and fundraising
events sponsored by Church World
Service in which St. George's
participates.
ERD

Episcopal
Relief and Development is the
collective response of
Episcopalians to help people in
need. Through grants for
emergency relief, rehabilitation
and development
ERD
responds to people in need in the
U.S. and around the world.
St. George's
Rummage Sale
is organized and
conducted by volunteers to raise
funds for outreach projects. The
rummage sale is held on the first
weekend in October.
Salvation Army Meal Preparation,
the second Wednesday of each month,
volunteers prepare a meal in the
church kitchen to be served
downtown at Booth House through a
program for the homeless
administered by the
Salvation
Army.
The Other
Place Breakfast
Volunteers serve breakfast on the
fourth Saturday of each month at
The Other
Place, a daytime
shelter.
Fair Trade Coffee

At the November 2004 diocesan
convention, delegates voted to
encourage congregations to serve
Fair Trade coffee at church events.
There is a
special brand of Fair Trade coffee,
"Bishop's
Blend," which is private
labeled by Pura Vida. Profits from
Bishop's Blend go to Episcopal
Relief and Development
Blanket
Sunday
is one way St.
George's partners with Church World
Service. The
Tools of
Hope & Blanket Program
provides the right tools at the
right time and makes a world of
difference in the lives of people
in need. Blankets, tents,
bedding, and other emergency
supplies in the wake of natural
disasters and human calamities are
very real tools of hope.
Alcoholics Anonymous
St.
George's hosts AA meetings Fridays
at 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. The primary
purpose of AA is to stay sober and
help other alcoholics to achieve
sobriety.
